ShipWeight 14.60 is Now Available!

ShipWeight 14.60 is now available, introducing several new capabilities for weight engineering, estimation and advanced weight property management, together with a broad range of improvements and corrections.

The release includes new functionality developed in close cooperation with ShipWeight users across the maritime, offshore and aerospace industries.

Key Updates

Subproject Instances and Coordinate Transformations – Use multiple instances of the same subproject with individual position and rotation transformations. Weight and center of gravity data are automatically transformed and summarized into the master project.
Extended Moment of Inertia and Product of Inertia Support – New AutoSum options calculate MOIxx, MOIyy, MOIzz, Pxy, Pxz and Pyz from item data, together with radius-of-gyration based MOI values.
Improved Custom Code Handling and Navigation – Custom Code IDs can optionally be included in labels throughout ShipWeight, and the Code Summary provides direct access to items associated with a selected code.
Flexible Center of Gravity Coordinate Order – The order of CoG coordinates can now be configured globally and is consistently applied across windows and reports.
Plot Plan Visualization – A first version of the new Plot Plan window enables drawings to be scaled and prepared for visualization of weight information directly on plot plans.
Improved Statistical Risk Analysis – Risk analysis has been extended to item data, including support for analysis of selected items and configurable custom codes for item standard deviation.

Subproject Instances and Transformations

ShipWeight 14.60 extends the existing subproject functionality by allowing multiple instances of the same subproject to be included in a master project.

Each instance can have its own transformation, allowing identical modules, assemblies or other repeated structures to be positioned independently while maintaining a common source project. ShipWeight transforms the center of gravity information for each instance and summarizes the resulting values into the master project.

This is particularly useful for modular designs and projects containing repeated equipment or structures.

Advanced MOI and POI Calculations

Custom Codes have been extended with new AutoSum options for moments and products of inertia. ShipWeight can calculate MOIxx, MOIyy, MOIzz, Pxy, Pxz and Pyz from item data and summarize the results through the weight hierarchy.

Additional AutoSum options for MOI-Rxx, MOI-Ryy and MOI-Rzz support moment-of-inertia calculations based on radius of gyration.

These calculated properties are available across the Item, Main, Plot Plan, Code Summary and Weight Correction functionality.

Improved Custom Codes and CoG Configuration

ShipWeight 14.60 provides greater flexibility when working with Custom Codes. Code IDs can now optionally be included in labels, and several windows have been updated to respect this setting consistently.

The release also introduces a global setting for the order of the center of gravity coordinates. The selected order is used throughout ShipWeight, including reports and analysis windows.

In addition, Code Summary now provides an Open Items… command for quickly opening the Item window filtered by the selected code.

Additional Improvements

ShipWeight 14.60 also includes improvements to MON and Custom Import, reports, Auto Estimation, weight group status handling, security display colors, global filters and numerous corrections identified through customer testing.

The meeting will be of interest to active users of MassTrack and ShipWeight as well as those who are considering acquiring it.

The meeting is also an opportunity to meet other users in an informal setting for exchanging experiences and discussions on best practices. Re-Estimation & Variants Analysis

The new “Re-Estimate” function in ShipWeight allows you to automatically update all parametric estimates whenever one or more input parameters change. Additionally, a new “Variants” window lets you create estimate variants, each with its own set of input parameters.

You can run estimations for all variants automatically using the original estimation settings and easily compare results at both the weight group and aggregated levels. Updates are clearly highlighted, making it easy to see how input parameter variations impact the results.

Kickstart Your Parametric Estimation

The “Auto Weight and CoG Estimation” window in ShipWeight enables you to define initial conditions—such as detail level, estimation method, and coefficient extraction—before running an automated weight group estimation.

Results from different initial settings can be compared side by side, and a selected result set, along with its corresponding settings, can be transferred to the main window. From there, you can further analyze and refine the estimate using the parametric estimation window.

Enhanced Parametric Method Overview

A newly integrated table in the parametric estimation window now displays the available methods for the current weight group, along with their corresponding results.

This enhancement allows for easy comparison of estimation methods, and you can conveniently select your preferred method using a radio button next to each result.

ShipWeight Patch 14.06 is Now Available

ShipWeight Patch 14.06 primarily focuses on refining and correcting minor issues found in ShipWeight 14. However, it also introduces several new features, including:

A quick and easy way to create subprojects
The ability to filter out inactive projects from the Open window
An option to display negative numbers in red font for better visibility
Two new regression line types: inverse and polynomial
A feature to view all regression lines simultaneously in the estimation graph

Here are some more details on the new features mentioned above:

Quick and easy way to create subprojects

You can now create subprojects directly from the project selection window. A new ‘Add’ button allows you to enter the subproject name. Additionally, you can quickly create multiple subprojects at once using the syntax 1-N (where N is a whole number greater than 1). This automatically generates N subprojects, sequentially numbered from 1 to N.

Ability to filter out inactive projects from the Open window

In the ‘Open Project’ window, you can now hide inactive projects by checking the ‘Hide Inactive Projects’ box. This filters out any project that does not have the ‘Active’ checkbox selected in the ‘Project Info’ window.

Display negative numbers in red font for better visibility

The Options window now includes a setting to display negative weights in red font in both the main and item windows.

Two new regression line types: inverse and polynomial

The parametric estimation window now supports inverse and polynomial regression line types.

View all regression lines simultaneously in the estimation graph

The graph menu now includes an option to display all regression lines simultaneously in the estimation window. Regression lines not selected for the regression coefficient are shown in gray.

Quality Assurance – Find Your Duplicate Items

Detecting and correcting erroneous duplicates is important for the quality of your weight data. However, these duplicates can be difficult to find and identify. As an example, they can be same items entered twice in different weight groups or it can be two identical items in same position that were supposed to be one on starboard and one on portside. They may share the same position and weight, but not the same ID or description, or it can be items that even have different weights but are in the same positions when there should be only one weight.

ShipWeight has a dedicated function to find these cases, list them for you and make it easy for you to correct them. Here is how to do it:

Open the Items window to list your items:

On the Tools menu choose Find -> Identical Items…

This will bring up Find Items window to help you find identical items:

The combination of weight group and item number must be unique in ShipWeight, so you are not allowed to enter any items with the same combination of weight group and item number. That is a way to prevent duplicate items going into the database.

However, there can be identical items entered twice in different weight groups or it can be two identical items in same position that were supposed to be one on starboard and one on portside. They may share the same position and weight, but not the same ID or description, or it can be items that even have different weights but are in the same positions when there should be only one weight.

ShipWeight’s “Find Duplicate” function can be used to detect those.

First, you check the boxes next to the Compare Field that you determine will be used to look for identical items. For example, if you want to find any items in the database that share same Description and Weight:

Next click the Query button and the window will start to search through the project:

On the right side you can see several instances with items that share the same Description and Weight:

And if you click on the first one, you will get the details of the selection in the window below:

The detail shows that weight group E3.3.1 contains two items (00214 and 00217) with the same Description and Weight.

Now, DoubleClick on any of these two lines, and ShipWeight will bring these item to you in the Item Window where you can correct them.
